Shyla and her three children; a daughter and 2 sons need help in building a house for themselves. Shyla is an Anganwadi employee who earns Rs. 3000 per month. Since her husband does not take care of the family, Shyla has to run the household expenses and also the children’s education with her meager income. Her daughter is doing her graduation at CMS College, Kottayam. The younger boys are studying in Govt UP School, Valavoor. The kids are quite bright, but their studies are being affected due to their current situation.
The family lives in a single room shed now, built in a relative’s land. They did not have any land of their own. The kids usually sleep in their neighbor’s house, since they are kind enough to give them a place to sleep. Shyla recently received 3 cents of property as her family share, which can be used to build a house. They are unable to get any help from the government to build a house, since she is technically considered as a government employee and is not eligible for any government grants.
Seeing their dire situation, the PTA of Govt UP School, Valavoor formed a committee to help this family. It is led by the PTA President, and also supported by the teachers and other parents of this school. The estimate for a new house is around Rs.2 lakhs. So far, they have raised Rs.50,000 through individual donations and also received Rs.25,000 from ‘Malabar Gold’. The association and the teachers are desperately looking for a helping hand to raise the rest of the funds. Construction has already started with the Rs. 75,000 they have raised so far.
