Kuttanad, one of the low-lying areas in Kerala is still staggering under flood waters, more than a month after most districts recovered from floods. One of the worst disasters in over a century, the Kerala floods affected more than 8 lakh people, destroying more than 11,000 houses. People living in Kuttanad have not been able to return to their houses since the area is still inundated with water. Most of them are staying at relief camps, relatives’ places or on rent.
Chavara Cultural Center at Ernakulam, Kerala has taken up the initiative of supplying relief materials like food, water, medicines, cleaning supplies and cloths to these people who have no way of getting back to normal lives any time soon. The team approached MicroCharity for assistance, and we decided to take up the cost of cloth materials which comes to INR 30,000.
