Geetha’s story is truly heart-rending. From the moment this 10-year old orphan girl was sent as a domestic help, she has been through a lot of hardships and poverty. Now Geetha needs our support to provide a safe shelter for her and her 3 daughters, aged 17, 12 and 11 respectively. Her husband who was an alcoholic and drug-addict has been absconding for the past 9 years, leaving her to take care of the children’s education and their daily expenses.
The family does not have a proper house. They are now staying in a temporary shed built on panchayat-given land. Her eldest daughter is doing Nursing course at a government college. The younger children stay in an orphanage and attend school. Geetha works as a domestic help in three houses nearby, earning lesser than Rs.10,000. She is not able to do any physically demanding work due to intense headaches which she has had since childhood after a coconut fell on her head.
Since Geetha is worried that her growing girls don’t have a safe house to sleep in, and is desperate to build a small house. The local parishioners and well-wishers have collected some funds to help her. Total cost would come to Rs.10 lakhs and the family has managed to collect Rs.4 lakhs including panchayat funds.
