Merlina Monica is a 10 year old girl studying in 4th standard. Her parents divorced 4 years back, and she is now living with her mother and grand mother. Her mother works as a cleaning lady, but earns only Rs. 2500 a month. She is asked to quit school as the fees is not paid in full. The school fee is Rs. 4500, out of which Rs. 1500 is already paid. She now requires Rs. 3000 for the school fee and Rs. 1000 for uniforms, books and shoes. There is a monthly school fee of Rs. 250 which the mother will take care. So the fund required is Rs. 4000.

July 1, 2012 - Fund request for School fee
Merlina is now studying in 5th standard. The families condition hasn’t improved much. Her father died recently due to excessive alcohol consumption. She requested Rs. 6,500 for school fee, uniform, and books.
July 13, 2012 - MicroCharity approves fund request
MicroCharity approved the fund request, and decided to raise Rs. 8,000, a little above the requested fund of Rs. 6,500. We hope the little extra money brings a little more happiness to the poor family.
July 22, 2012 - The payment and the surprise
Merlina met us with her mom at Bangalore. She needed the money on July 23rd, the deadline given by the school authorities. We informed her mother that we would be paying Rs. 8,000, a little more than her fund request. To our surprise, she refused to take the little extra money saying ‘it would help someone else in need’. The school fee is Rs. 6,175 and she wouldn’t take anything more than that. We were really moved by her response and paid her Rs. 6,175. The amount was raised from 4 donors.

She got above average marks in the 1st Assessment exam. We are motivating her to concentrate and study well.
June 10, 2013 - Fund request for School fee
Merlina is now studying in 6th standard. She passed 5th standard with ‘A grade’. She is a bit weak in mathematics and her mother is sending her to a tuition class nearby to improve her marks. This year she requested Rs. 7,500 against school fee, uniform, and books.

Merlina has moved to 7th grade with good marks in all subjects, except Mathematics. Her mother is keen on continuing her education and approached MicroCharity for help with the tuition fee this academic year. MicroCharity team decided to collect a little extra this time since Merlina’s mother is suffering from backache and is not able to work every day.

Merlina is slowly, but surely progressing in her studies and doing us proud. She scored 80% in all subjects in 7th grade and has moved to 8th grade now. MicroCharity has been supporting her from 4th standard and the family is very grateful for the help that you have given her. Merlina’s mother has continuous back pain which prevents her from doing regular jobs. She works is a daily wage sweeper in some offices nearby and the income is not enough to sustain her daughter’s education. School fee this year is Rs.10,000.

Merlina is in 9th grade now, having scored 75% in her 8th grade exams.To add to the difficulties of the family, her mother met with an accident wherein she was hit by a bike. Her backache worsened as a result of this and she has not been able to go for work. Last month, she lost her job as a house maid, since she had to take too many days off. Merlina and her mother are staying with her uncle, who has also asked them to move out of their house since he cannot support them any longer. With all this adverse conditions, Merlina is still keen on studying and requested MicroCharity for support. We salute their spirit! Merlina’s school fee for this year is Rs.12,000 and we continue to support her through the generosity of our well-wishers.MicroCharity approves fund request of Rs.12,000.

MicroCharity has been supporting Merlina from 4th standard. In spite of many adverse condition like her father’s death, her mother’s inability to go to work, and living with her uncle who wanted them to move it, Merlina got decent marks in her 1st PUC examication. She’s in 2nd PUC now, and the family is in no position to pay the college fee.
Total fee for the year comes to Rs. 35,000 of which they can arrange Rs.15,000. The family requested MicroCharity to help with Rs. 20,000.
